L'écorce qui se forme sur lui se solidifie au fil du temps, lui fournissant une protection en plus de l'aider à mieux camoufler son corps massif. Même quand il semble léthargique, il est capable d'agir très rapidement et avec une grande brutalité.
Son nom vient de Mastodonsaurus (un gros Temnospondyle du Trias Moyen), mastoc, targe (un petit bouclier souvent utilisé en combat très rapproché) et alligator.
